About Burnout

The term ‘burnout’ was first used by Herbert Freudenberger, an American psychologist,

in the early1970s. Maslach, Jackson, & Leiter,(1997) defined burnout as a psychological

disease-related to emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment which is found among people who work with other people in some capacity.

Signs of Burnout

Whitfield, (2006)

  • Chronic Fatigue

  • Anger at those making demand.

  • Self criticism

  • Cynicism

  • Frequent headache and gastrointestinal disturbance.

  • Weight loss or gain

  • Sleeplessness

  • Shortness of breath

  • Feeling of helplessness
