History of Burnout

Maslach and Freudenberger

  • In the mid-1970s the initial research work was done on the work-related burnout by Freudenberger and Maslach. Freudenberger was a psychiatrist working in a health care agency whereas, Maslach was a psychologist working on the emotions at the workplace. Freudenberger was finding the process that was effecting the emotional depletion and loss of motivation in work. On the other hand, Maslach interviewed a lot of people regarding their experience of work-related stress. Both of them found three major components of burnout through their research. Those components were emotional exhaustion, personal accomplishment, and depersonalization.
